Bringing a skincare product to market involves several key stages. Here's a practical overview of the typical OEM/ODM journey.
Step 1: Concept & Briefing
Define your product vision: target audience, skin concern, format (serum, cream, softgel), active ingredients, packaging preferences, and budget. The more specific your brief, the better the manufacturer can deliver.
Step 2: Formula Development & Prototyping
The R&D team creates an initial batch based on your brief. You review samples for texture, absorption, and fragrance. Feedback is given, and the formula is adjusted — often through several rounds.
Step 3: Stability & Safety Testing
The formula undergoes stability testing (heat, cold, light), preservative efficacy testing, and safety/irritation testing. Also includes compatibility checks with your packaging. This takes 4–12 weeks.
Step 4: Packaging Design & Sourcing
While testing proceeds, packaging is designed and sourced: primary packaging (bottles, jars, blister packs), secondary packaging (cartons, labels), and branding elements. Custom options may take extra time.
Step 5: Pilot Production
A small trial batch is run to validate the formula at scale, test filling equipment, and produce samples for final review or regulatory submission.
Step 6: Mass Production
Once the pilot is approved, full-scale production begins: raw material sourcing, mixing, filling, packaging, and in-process quality checks.
Step 7: Quality Control & Batch Release
Final QC checks include appearance, active potency, microbial testing, and physical integrity. A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is issued. Batch is released for shipment.
Step 8: Logistics & Delivery
Products are packed and shipped to your warehouse. Manufacturers often handle customs and freight coordination.
Step 9: Post-Launch Support
Ongoing support includes re-orders, formula tweaks, new variants, and regulatory assistance for new markets.
