Both groups showed significant reductions in wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation, with no statistical difference between them. The bakuchiol group, however, reported significantly less scaling and burning. A later open-label study confirmed that bakuchiol reduced wrinkle depth progressively over 12 weeks.
The clinical base for bakuchiol is far smaller than for retinol—one major trial versus decades of research. But for users who cannot tolerate retinoids, it is a reasonable alternative.
